So with a free day, and it way too cold to do much else, I decide to get a start on it. Lucky for me I just happened to have to charm packs of Bliss on hand, so I could add a few more 5" squares of my favourites to the quilt and dispose of some of my less favourites, or play around with the layout a bit.
There is nothing quite like a pile of gorgeous fabrics piled up....couldn't you just eat it???
Hmmm....now, I am not one to read instructions, and basically only refer to them as a last resort. Especially on a basic pattern. Now this pattern starts off as a basic four patch with 5" squares, how hard could this be?? Who needs a pattern?? Right? But, I paid for it, so I read it. Haha, you thought I wasn't going to, but I did.
So when it came to the little sashings....(if you go back up to the picture and have a look at the picture, the little strips that are 9.5" x 2.5") Yes well, one would think that as you need 70 of them, you would cut across the width of your fabric strips of 2.5", then cut those little strips into 9.5" strips wouldn't you?? Like how many quilts have I made?? That's how we always do it!! Der!! So for once I decide to read the instructions, and alas, nope, this time we are cutting the strips 9.5" across the fabric width, and then cutting those big strips into 2.5" strips! Now if you are a quilter, does this sound weird to you??
So, while I am trying to work out why Annie has done it this way, thinking maybe its to get the most out of the fabric, without wastage, blah, blah, blah. My hubby is listening, but not really caring....I decide to follow Annie, but I was doubtful. In all my doubtfulness, I measured once and cut it, but I cut at 9" NOT 9.5" ARGH!!!!!! Crap.......
Now what??? Will I have enough of the blue spot?? Oh crap, crap, crap......and crap. Robert just laughs and says, call Annie and order more. Yeah, thanks for your advice honey......as it turns out, I cut it all up and had just enough for all my little strips without ordering more. Phew. So, I still do not know the theory behind cutting the fabric 9.5" across instead of 2.5"across as I ended up doing.....

Great when we 'just happen to have time' to pop into H&P. The fabrics are lovely....have fun....don't do your head in with the instructions...Love the pattern.
maybe she thinks you have more control over the fabric when you are cutting the short lengths off of the large chunk? I do know that when you are cutting little strips you have more chance of getting a bit wobbly cut. Or maybe when she worked it out, you weren't wasting as much fabric? Cute anyways...
Gosh well now I am totally confused, never having made quilts before. But when I do something I usually follow the instructions. I have just made Annie's Birdsong jewellery box, I couldn't have done it without the instructions.
Love love love the fabrics... Hope it all works out and you can get it finished to show us.
